Many brides are reinventing the traditional wedding and reception by tying the events together with a theme. Themes can include colors, songs, and/or events and places that are especially significant to the bride and groom.

Susan Peloquin, function coordinator for the Black Orchid in Shrewsbury, said she recently helped arrange two weddings whose themes were based around places of significance to the couple.

“One was an Irish wedding. Of course they were going to Ireland for their honeymoon. The tables were done with white tablecloths and green napkins, and instead of using number cards on the tables, the guests were seated at tables named for different counties in Ireland. The wedding cake was a three-foot-high cathedral with four round cakes at the base. It was just beautiful. And the guests received table favors of glass paperweights in the shape of a shamrock,” Peloquin said.

Guests In Leis “Another wedding we had was a Hawaiian theme, and the guests were seated at tables with different Hawaiian sayings. Each chair had a lei on its seat, and the guests wore those through the reception. The cake was garnished with pineapple, and there were floating candles for centerpieces,” Peloquin said. That couple honeymooned in (where else?) Hawaii.
